“The way to discover truth about life is to discover yourself.” Taken from an interview with Agnes Martin

. Agnes Bernice Martin (March 22, 1912 – December 16, 2004), born in Canada, was an American abstract painter. Her work has been defined as an "essay in discretion on inward-ness and silence". Although she is often considered or referred to as a minimalist, Martin considered herself an abstract expressionist. . She is perhaps most recognised for her evocative paintings marked out in subtle pencil lines and pale colour washes. Although restrained, her style was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. Martin believed that spiritual inspiration and not intellect created great work. ‘Without awareness of beauty, innocence and happiness’ Martin wrote ‘one cannot make works of art’. . In the early 1960s, Martin’s geometric compositions evolved into what would later be seen as her signature style: the square grid. This room represents this important moment in her career by displaying three key paintings which explore the aesthetic of the grid in different colours and forms: The Islands 1961, Friendship 1963 and A Grey Stone 1963. Similar in size, the grids are made from lines intersecting at right angles, creating rectangular divisions within the square format. Referring to these paintings, the critic Lucy Lippard described them as ‘legendary examples of an unrepetitive use of a repetitive medium’. ‘More and more I excluded from my paintings all curved lines, until finally my compositions consisted only of vertical and horizontal lines.’ Agnes Martin, 1967 .
