This pretty book is trending on #bookstagram and here's my own copy. Although all the reviews I've seen are positive, I'm not sure I will read it this month, my #tbr is full. . ♥ ♥ I'm currently reading the Autobiography of Assata Shakur and Man I'm blown. I feel like standing on a mountain and scream to the whole world that I'm Black and I'm a Woman and I'm Powerful. . ♥ I think it's a good thing to be reminded of who we are, of what we are. . . ♥ ♥ What are you reading? Have you read Ayeesha Attah's new book? What do you think about it? . . ♥ "It's always easy to look back and see what we were, yesterday, ten years ago. It is hard to see what we are. If you can master that trick, you will get along." . —Harper Lee, Go Set a Watchman.

“You're both the fire and the water that extinguishes it. You're the narrator, the protagonist, and the sidekick. You're the storyteller and the story told. You are somebody's something, but you are also your you.“ — #TurtlesAllTheWayDown by #JohnGreen

So in love with the cover of this book😍 Do you judge a book by its cover? I wish I could say I didn’t but unfortunately I do🙈 If the cover catches my eye I’m more likely to find out about the book.

favorite places 📚✨⠀ .⠀ it may come as no surprise to you, fellow bookdragon, that i have a soft spot for well designed libraries. a few years ago i had the opportunity to go on an in depth tour of aarhus’ dokk1 library in denmark, and i was blown away by the amazing level of detail that went into designing their beautiful space. to this day, that visiting beautiful library is one of my favorite memories from the trip. do you like to visit libraries while you travel? why or why not? let’s chat about it in the comments! 📝

“Silence can be either protest or consent, but most times it’s fear.” * * The Sellout is the most uncomfortable book I’ve ever read. But, it was a challenging read for me, and I quite liked it. I personally think books that make us feel really uncomfortable are the ones that open up our minds to the realities of the world, and make us aware of things and situations we never thought of before. I will post the full review tomorrow 📚 What’s the most uncomfortable book you’ve read?

*DISCUSSION POST* a few days ago, I posted how I felt about obsessing about Instagram numbers: follower count, likes etc and I loved the response on that post. So I decided to do these discussion posts occasionally, hope you share your thoughts below Today I was thinking about book reviews. It is so much easier to discuss books with people who have already read the book but writing a review is not straight forward at all Every person is so unique and each of our personal experiences, values and beliefs might impact our reading experience and it is also possible that the key takeaway or what you like the most in a well loved book might be completely different from some other person who also read and loved the book. Moreover, some of us love plot based books and some of us love character based books. Everyone is so different! I always struggle with writing reviews because for books I love I want to write an impactful review which will probably help a few more people consider reading the book and in order to do that you need to carefully evaluate what you put out there so that you strike a balance between what you love and what another reader might need to know to read the book. And when I dislike books it is because it contrasts with some fundamental belief in me and in that case it becomes difficult to balance your personal bias with the merits of the book. Do you review books? Do you have any favorite reviewers who do something differently? What is your review writing method? Are there are particular type of reviews you love reading? Personally, my reviews are focused on how I felt while/after reading the book and about the characters. After finishing the book I let a day pass with my thoughts about what I read and then I write about how the book made me feel and if any characters stood out for me. I give in some basic information about the plot but I feel like I don’t have to focus on this a lot as this information can be found online but I’m thinking I should do this so that the reader doesn’t have to go to another place like Goodreads to look for this information and only talk about the plot if it stands out

"Learn this now and learn it well. Like a compass facing north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman. Always." - A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini. 〰 There's a reason why A Thousand Splendid Suns has been sitting on my shelves for over 2 years. After reading The Kite Runner, I knew this book would, in all likelihood, also break my heart. This heartbreak is different to that from, say, A Man Called Ove. The latter is a bittersweet heartbreak mixed in with sweet and funny moments. Hosseini's is a race of endurance. There are sweet, heartfelt moments here and there but, for the most part, it is only pain. Not that you could expect much else from a book set during war and the Taliban regime, especially when women are the focus of the story, but still, the fact remains, it's a race of endurance. I'll be honest, I'm having a bit of mixed feelings with A Thousand Splendid Suns. Even though it is a hard story to read, I am enjoying it - as much as you can enjoy such a story. However, the characters feel too one dimensional. The good ones are all good, the bad ones are all bad. Laila, Mariam, and Aziza are nothing short of saints who have learned to cope with years upon years of abuse and close encounters to death by the hands of one man but still manage to turn the other cheek. Rasheed is evil personified and, other than that glimpse of hope he offered upon his introduction into the story, has absolutely zero redeeming qualities. Actually, it is the secondary characters who offer a bit of nuance, like Mariam's and Laila's parents, but they have only little page-time. I'm close to the finish line and things just took an interesting turn. I'm looking forward to see what destiny has in store for our main characters and if they finally get some more than deserved respite from all the pain and suffering they've been through. What's your rating predictions for the book(s) you're currently reading? I think this will get something between a 4* & a 4,5* from me. . ✨ Challenges: #julybookstagram18 - love & war. #bookstagramtogetherjuly - book & mug. #novelbeanjuly - #currentlyreading
