Recent satellite imageries of USA nuclear test sites. Test purposes range from weapon development (Marshall Islands, image 3) to natural gas extraction (Colorado, image 4). The Nevada National Security Site (images 1, 2) is home to 928 nuclear tests. From ‘Fallout’ (descriptions below). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is Sheng-Wen Lo (@sheng_wen_lo) from Taiwan, based in The Netherlands. This week I’m taking over World Press Photo's Instagram feed; I was recently awarded 3rd prize of the 2018 Digital Storytelling Contest (short form). My interest lies in the relationships between human, animals and the environment. For my work I use still and moving images, video games and installations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In project ‘Fallout’ (2015-), landscapes from nuclear test sites are assembled - 3D satellite imageries are constructed through coordinates from historical archives. Since 1945, there have been more than 2000 nuclear tests worldwide. Oftentimes, the test sites are so remote that people ignore the existence of these events. But the tests do exist. Fallout and radiation have left these sites undisturbed by humans, inadvertently transforming some of them into animal sanctuaries. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ See the exhibition of ‘Fallout’ in the upcoming Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition at Hong-gah Museum (@honggah_spa) in Taipei this October, under the theme ‘Offline Browser’. #fallout #nucleartest #googleearth #sedancrater #nevadatestsite #enewetakatoll #ivymike #offlinebrowsing #honggahmuseum #shengwenlo #WPPh2018 #worldpressphoto2018 #worldpressphoto

“La fusion nucléaire”... Maybe this should be titled ‘Ivy Mike’...well it probably could be if it was 5 times as big..! The average Narrowboat weighs in at around 13 tons which is a snip compared to ‘Ivy Mike’ (first full scale thermonuclear device to be detonated in 1952)... That said...this bugger is gonna go off down the canal like a rocket ship (‘scuse the pun)... I still dislike boats...it’s just not natural... This is Macclesfield Canal...this is where I spent my formative years with crap rods and dodgy fishing reels mostly getting smashed by the local pike on summer sunrises...gawd I miss this place... #narrowboat #nuclearpower #nuclearfusion #ivymike #thermonuclear #canalside #canals #ukwaterways #waterways #formativeyears #memorable_day #rememberyourroots #macclesfield #macclesfieldcanal #suttonhall #fishingmemories #cheshire #cheshirelifemagazine #cheshirelifemag #canallife #narrowboatlife #hometown #gonehome #ukholidays #visitcheshire #OlympusUK #olympuspenf
